1.
Wake on up to another groundhog day, Yet, somehow my horoscope still changes. Nothing in the fridge, Going out is life or death, It's just as well, I'm becoming alcoholic. What can I say? Just living under lockdown. Tell me what day of the week/month/year is it? I grow a beard, my fingernails, the shower grows dusty. Now the only way to tell that time has passed, Is when there's nothing left to wipe an... What can I say? I hid away, Suffice it to say... That's living under lockdown. It was time to come out of that shell, But it's so hard when all the world's a living hell. Go, tell me what's changed? In so many ways, it ll remains the same. So, at least there's that.
2.
A mist rolls over town, While the rats scurry around. Fearing the embrace of rigour mortis, They run to the north, That's where the port is. I suck out my teeth, count each of my bones, But I can't leave this town when it's my home, Besides, there's a fence put up 'round the perimeter, Guarded by roughs with revolvers. Don't you know honey, How hopelessness breeds? It's not the end of the world, it's a perfect disease. Don't cry honey, My heart's still free, Though I'm down on my knees, thanks to this perfect disease. Don't you know honey, How hopelessness breeds? It's not the end of the world, just a perfect disease. Don't cry honey, My heart's still free, Though I'm down on my knees, thanks to this perfect disease.

Bats in Labs 04:06
On the second floor, Far from the madding crowd, I'm feeling safe now. Has the world gone this mad? Turning a blind eye again, Could it be a cheek instead? Bite into bat, Made in a lab, Beemed into your lap. Now you're on your bullshit again, Won't it ever end? I've tried so hard, Just can't understand. Stood before your Jesus, Even he'd deny you thrice. With your true colours showing, You're due a reprimand. Feeling so sorry, Bought your friends on Amazon. It's almost funny, We've played this game so long: Destroyed habitats, Cobalt mine kidaps, The billions in the banks. Yet you reach for that foil hat again, Won't it ever end? Won't it ever end? Won't it ever end? Won't it ever end? Won't it ever end? Won't it ever end?

about

Between the artwork reminiscent of all those coronavirus rate of infection graphs we've been used to seeing, and the reference to British Prime Minister Johnson's talk of "squashing sombreros" it's clear from the get-go where Charles Hurts is going with all this.

Having been encouraged to send work-in-progress tracks to Fear’s shows on both Dublin Digital Radio and the 343 Radio during the lockdown, Charles Hurts rediscovered an unreleased track from 2010 influenced by Albert Camus’ the Plague and thought it timely for a re-working. This proved the catalyst for the other tracks, like a throw back to a time when groups, rather cynically, released novelty records in an attempt to cash in on current events (eg Telstar by the Tornadoes). As such, “Squashed" should be viewed through a similar insincere lens, a songwriting exercise for an alternate reality where this may be deemed acceptable.

Inspired by aspects of life under the coronavirus lockdown, the tracks' themes look to the repetition and boredom of everyday life and how the crisis proved a breeding ground for some of humanity’s best and worst aspects to emerge.

Squashed is the first release from Charles Hurts since 2012.
